“I said no charity.”
“Then call it repayment.”
“For what?”

“For not seeing you sooner,” he said.

He was terrible at it.

Grant looked through the front window.

Grant ended the call.

She hated it.

The sentence landed harder than he expected.
Martin Greer looked like he might resign in his chair.
Then Ruthie stood.

Grant stepped aside.
Ruthie approached the microphone. Her hands trembled, so she gripped the podium.

The streetlights flickered on.

Ruthie looked at him for a long time.

Ruthie smiled despite herself. “You want to hear a bedtime story?”
